What it found

Taking the vitamin C-enriched gelatin before exercise was associated with an increase in blood markers of collagen synthesis, with effects showing up within hours of the exercise bout. Broader reviews of this area point in the same direction: collagen combined with vitamin C, taken shortly before exercise that loads connective tissue, may support tendon and ligament health and the recovery process. Vitamin C's role here is not incidental — the body needs vitamin C to build stable collagen, so pairing the two is thought to matter more than taking collagen on its own.

What it means (and the limits)

These findings are worth attention, but they should be read carefully. The evidence largely comes from short-term biological markers — signs that collagen synthesis increased in blood — rather than from studies that tracked whether people actually recovered from injuries faster or had fewer tendon or ligament problems over time. Much of the research so far has also focused on active or athletic individuals, so it is not yet clear how well the results apply to the general population or to people managing an existing injury. This is still an early and developing area of research, not a settled conclusion.

Taken together, the research is a reasonable rationale for pairing collagen with vitamin C around exercise, but it does not show that doing so prevents injury or guarantees faster healing. As with joint-support ingredients generally, any benefit is likely to build gradually with consistent use rather than appear immediately, and supplements are not a substitute for proper training, recovery, and medical care when an injury does occur.
