Bone density naturally declines after menopause, and researchers have been looking at whether specific collagen peptides — already studied for skin and joints — might also support bone health. A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study set out to test this question directly in postmenopausal women over a full year.
What the research looked at
The trial enrolled 131 postmenopausal women, with an average age of about 64, who were randomly assigned to take either 5 grams of specific collagen peptides or a placebo every day for 12 months. Neither the participants nor the researchers knew who was receiving the active supplement until the study was unblinded, which is the gold-standard design for reducing bias. Of the 131 women enrolled, 102 completed the full 12 months.
What it found
Women in the collagen group showed significant increases in bone mineral density at two clinically important sites: the spine and the femoral neck (part of the hip). Alongside this, blood markers of bone turnover shifted in a favorable direction — markers of bone formation rose while markers of bone breakdown declined, suggesting the body was building slightly more bone than it was losing. A smaller subset of participants was followed for a longer period, and the results suggested the benefit continued for roughly four years.
What it means (and the limits)
These findings are encouraging, but they come from one specific formulation of collagen peptides tested in one specific population — postmenopausal women around 64 years old — so they may not apply to other collagen products, other doses, or other groups of people. About a fifth of the original participants did not complete the study, and the longer four-year follow-up involved only a smaller subset, which limits how confidently the longer-term results can be generalized. Bone density is only one part of overall bone and fracture risk, and this research does not show that collagen peptides prevent fractures or replace medical treatment for osteoporosis. As with any supplement, benefits build gradually with consistent daily use — collagen peptides are not a cure, and postmenopausal women concerned about bone health should continue to work with their doctor on diet, exercise, and any prescribed therapies.
