Tendons, ligaments, and cartilage are often mentioned in the same breath whenever a joint hurts, but they are three distinct tissues with different jobs, different structures, and very different healing timelines. Knowing which one is involved in an injury can help you understand what to expect during recovery — and why some aches settle in days while others take months. What Are Tendons?

Tendons are tough, fibrous cords that connect muscle to bone. When a muscle contracts, the tendon transmits that pulling force to the bone, which is what actually produces movement. Tendons are made mostly of tightly packed collagen fibers arranged in parallel bundles, giving them high tensile strength along their length. Familiar examples include the Achilles tendon at the back of the heel and the rotator cuff tendons in the shoulder. Because tendons handle repeated pulling and stretching, they are prone to overuse injuries such as tendinitis or tendinosis, especially in athletes and people whose work involves repetitive motion.

What Are Ligaments?

Articular cartilage (the type lining joint surfaces) relies largely on the surrounding joint fluid for nutrients. There is also fibrocartilage, a tougher variant found in structures like the knee's menisci, which combine cushioning with some load-bearing strength.

How These Tissues Heal — and Why It Differs

  • Tendons have a modest blood supply, so mild strains often improve over several weeks with rest, gradual loading, and physical therapy, though more severe tears may need longer rehabilitation or surgical repair.
  • Ligaments heal more slowly because their blood supply is even more limited; a mild sprain may resolve in weeks, while a significant tear (like a torn ACL) often requires months of rehabilitation and sometimes surgery.
  • Cartilage has the most limited capacity to repair itself of the three, precisely because it lacks a direct blood supply in most areas. Once damaged, cartilage generally does not regenerate the way skin or bone does, which is why cartilage wear (as in osteoarthritis) tends to be a long-term, progressive concern rather than something that reverses on its own.

Regardless of which tissue is affected, general habits that support recovery and long-term joint health include maintaining a healthy body weight to reduce joint load, staying appropriately active with low-impact movement, allowing adequate rest after injury before returning to full activity, and following any rehabilitation program recommended by a physiotherapist.
