Knee osteoarthritis is one of the most common reasons people look for everyday pain relief, and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as ibuprofen are a standard option. But NSAIDs can come with gastrointestinal side effects, which has led researchers to study whether curcumin — the active compound in turmeric — could offer similar relief with a gentler safety profile. Two pieces of published research speak directly to this question.
What the research looked at
A multicenter randomized trial conducted in Thailand enrolled 367 patients with knee osteoarthritis. Over four weeks, participants received either curcumin (1,500 mg per day) or ibuprofen (1,200 mg per day), and researchers compared changes in pain, physical function, and gastrointestinal side effects between the two groups. Separately, a broader meta-analysis pooled results from 16 randomized trials involving a combined 1,810 adults, comparing curcumin or turmeric extract with NSAIDs for osteoarthritis symptoms.
What it found
In the Thai trial, pain and function improved to a similar degree in both the curcumin group and the ibuprofen group over the four weeks. The key difference was tolerability: patients taking curcumin experienced fewer gastrointestinal side effects than those taking ibuprofen. The larger meta-analysis reached a consistent conclusion across the 16 pooled trials — curcumin and turmeric extract showed efficacy similar to NSAIDs for osteoarthritis symptoms, with better overall tolerability.
What it means (and the limits)
Taken together, this research suggests curcumin can provide short-term pain and function relief comparable to a standard NSAID for knee osteoarthritis, with fewer digestive side effects — a meaningful consideration for people who are sensitive to NSAIDs. Curcumin is generally considered safe for short-term use. Even so, there are real limits to keep in mind. Curcumin is poorly absorbed from the gut on its own, so how much actually reaches the bloodstream — and how that varies between products and formulations — matters and isn't addressed by these findings. The Thai trial also followed patients for only four weeks, so it does not show what happens with longer-term use. Curcumin should be viewed as a supportive option that may help with joint comfort over time, not a cure for osteoarthritis, and it will not reverse existing joint damage. Anyone managing knee osteoarthritis should continue working with their doctor on an overall treatment plan, including whether an NSAID, curcumin, or another approach is appropriate for them.
