Deficiency often has no obvious symptoms at first, though some people notice bone or muscle aches, fatigue, or muscle weakness. A blood test is the only reliable way to know your level, so it's worth discussing with your doctor, especially if you fall into one of the categories above.
Getting enough vitamin D
- Sunlight: Brief, regular sun exposure on the arms and face, without sunscreen, allows the skin to produce vitamin D. The amount of time needed varies with skin tone, season, and latitude.
- Food sources: Fatty fish (salmon, mackerel, sardines, tuna), egg yolks, and fortified foods such as milk, yogurt, or cereals provide meaningful amounts.
- Supplements: Where sunlight and diet fall short, a vitamin D supplement is a common and generally well-tolerated option, though the right dose depends on your baseline level and individual needs.
A nutrient that works alongside others
