What "undenatured" actually means
Proteins have a natural, folded three-dimensional shape. Heat, acids, or intense processing can "denature" a protein — unfolding it and changing its structure, the way heat turns a raw egg white opaque. Undenatured type II collagen is manufactured using a low-heat process specifically designed to preserve that native, folded structure. This matters because the way the immune system recognizes and responds to type II collagen appears to depend on it keeping its original shape.
How oral tolerance works
UC-II is thought to act through a mechanism called oral tolerance, which is different from how most joint ingredients work. Rather than being absorbed intact into the bloodstream and delivered to joint tissue, undenatured type II collagen is believed to interact with immune tissue in the gut lining, particularly in areas called Peyer's patches in the small intestine. When the immune system encounters small amounts of undenatured type II collagen there, it appears to help "recalibrate" how the body's immune response reacts to the body's own type II collagen elsewhere, including in the cartilage of joints. This is a naturally occurring immune process — the same general principle behind how the body learns to tolerate many food proteins — rather than a drug-like mechanism.
Why the dose is so small
One of the more surprising things about UC-II is the dose: typically around 40 milligrams per day, compared with the multi-gram doses often used for hydrolyzed collagen or glucosamine. This is not a shortcut or an underdosing issue — it reflects how the ingredient is thought to work. Because oral tolerance relies on the immune system in the gut encountering and "recognizing" the intact collagen structure, only a small, structurally preserved amount is believed to be needed to trigger this immune-modulating effect. Larger doses do not appear to be the goal; structural integrity does.
What this means for cartilage
Cartilage in the joints is a living tissue that is constantly being broken down and rebuilt in small amounts, and this balance can shift with age, activity level, and everyday wear. Type II collagen makes up the bulk of cartilage's structural framework, so ingredients that support how the body maintains and protects that framework are of interest for long-term joint comfort and mobility.
