It is easy to assume they do the same job, but each one acts on cartilage and joint tissue in a different way. How Collagen Works

Collagen is the main structural protein in cartilage, tendons, and ligaments — it forms the network that gives cartilage its strength and flexibility. Supplements typically come in two forms. Hydrolyzed collagen (collagen peptides) is broken down into small fragments that are easier to absorb; the idea is that these fragments can act as building blocks and may also signal cartilage cells to produce more of their own collagen. Undenatured type II collagen (UC-II) works differently, in very small daily amounts, through a process called oral tolerance, which is thought to help modulate the immune response involved in cartilage breakdown.

How Glucosamine Works

As a supplement, it is usually taken as glucosamine sulfate or glucosamine hydrochloride, with the aim of supplying raw material for cartilage maintenance and potentially easing mild joint discomfort. It does not rebuild lost cartilage on its own, but it is thought to support the cartilage that is still present.

How Chondroitin Works

Chondroitin sulfate is another natural component of cartilage's extracellular matrix.
